House Measure Would Bar Wine Sales Over Net

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill enabling states to bar direct shipments of wine and beer to consumers, a measure backed by wholesalers at a time when some wineries are beginning to use the Internet to spur more sales., according to reports.

“Too many young children can buy alcohol over the Internet,” said Representative Joe Scarborough, (R-FL) a who sponsored the bill.

The bill, approved by a 310-112 vote, lets state attorneys general seek federal court orders barring wine makers from shipping straight to consumers if the there’s “reasonable cause” to believe the shipments violate state law.
