Coldwater Creek Cuts Catalog Costs

Coldwater Creek, Sandpoint, OH, had net sales of $65.1 million in first-quarter 1999, compared with net sales of $79.9 million in first-quarter 1998. The drop in net sales was partly due to a 27.4% decrease in mail volume, from 50.2 catalogs mailed to 36.4 million.

For the quarter, the company had net income of just under $1.6 million, up 123% from $703,000, reflecting a higher productivity and sales level per book mailed.

The quarter ended May 29.

The company’s 1999 fiscal first quarter included sales from its three catalogs, Northcountry, Spirit of the West and Bed & Bath. Net sales in first-quarter 1998 included $6.5 million from the company’s now-discontinued Milepost Four catalog.

The company also announced plans to expand its Web site (http://www.coldwatercreek.com) to include the entire spectrum of merchandise offered in its three catalogs.
