Chinese Leader Calls for Internet Regulation

Chinese President Hu Jintao this week requested that government officials promote and better regulate rapidly developing Internet service in the country, according to the Xinhua news agency.

This directive comes as the countary’s Internet population reached 137 million in December, an increase of almost 24% over 2006.

Hu made the call at a study session of the political bureau of the Central Committee of Chinese Communist Party, saying officials should “actively and creatively nurture a healthy online culture” that meets public demand.

Hu said the government should use advanced technologies to better guide public opinions voiced through the Internet.

“We should spread more information that is in good taste, and promote online products that can represent the grand Chinese culture, ” Hu said.
