Bell Canada to Run Forthcoming Do Not Call List

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has awarded a five-year contract to Bell Canada to operate the country’s National Do Not Call List (DNCL).

The list is expected to become effective by Sept. 30.

Bell Canada will be responsible for registering numbers, providing telemarketers with up-to-date versions of the list and receiving consumer complaints about telemarketing calls. The CRTC said the National DNCL will be self-financing through fees paid by telemarketers who will pay to subscribe to the list.

Last summer, the CRTC put forth rules governing the creation and operation of the list and began to solicit bids from parties interested in running the list (Direct Newsline, July 6).
