America Online has laid off 425 mostly technical support employees in its Ogden, UT; Columbus, OH; Oklahoma City; and Tucson, AZ call centers.
Spokesman Nicholas Graham declined to reveal the cost savings from this move.
He noted this was part of a company-wide effort to consolidate functions at its call centers “in order to serve our clients better.”
According to news reports, the layoffs in Ogden, UT came without warning and employees were not allowed to return to their desks to retrieve personal items.
But he did say these employees would receive a severance package, including help from a consulting company in preparing resumes and finding employment.
Graham declined to speculate on future layoffs.
