Insurance giant Aetna Inc. plans to open a prescription mail-order center in Pompano Beach, FL later this year, spending $32 million in capital investment and creating 800 jobs within three years, said company and Broward County development officials, according to news reports.
Aetna launched its mail-order delivery business in February 2003 by purchasing an operation in Kansas City, MO, formerly owned by a unit of Eckerd Health Services. But that unit is nearing capacity, and the insurer needed a second location, said Eric Elliott, president of Aetna Pharmacy Management.
Elliott said his firm would employ a wide range of workers, including some 400 in a call center with an average annual wage of $29,000; 330 in order fulfillment positions with an average wage of $27,000; and 126 pharmacists, technicians and systems engineers with an average wage of $49,000. Pharmacists alone will earn between $70,000 and $100,000.
When fully operational, the Pompano Beach complex will be able to fill 20 million prescriptions a year.
