Account-Specific Spotlight: Washington D.C.

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

These are the salad days for our nation’s capitol. Washington has the highest percentage of supermarket salad bars in the country, nearly 60 percent.

More than 90 percent of DC supermarkets have service delis. Beer and wine departments are among the biggest in the U.S. Credit cards and double-coupons are widespread, but don’t try renting a movie in the grocery store.

DC’s 1.9 million households account for nearly 2 percent of the total U.S. population. Giant Foods lives up to its name, dominating the market with 119 stores and a 34 share. Food Lion has grown to 68 stores and an 8.9 share, while A&P has dropped to a 3 percent share with 24 stores, down from 35 stores five years ago. Wal-Mart has garnered a 1 percent share of food sales with its three new Supercenters – still an also-ran to the 7 military stores in the city, with a combined 1.9 share.
