A Call From Hal

I enjoyed very much your tribute to Hal Crandall (“Hal Crandall Calling,” Nov. 15).

I’ll never forget the phone call I got back in 1977 when I was marketing director at Kole Enterprises. Gravelly [voice]: “Ralph, I’m Hal Crandall and I’ve been retained by a B-to-B mail order catalog in upstate New York to hire a general manager…Do you know of anyone who might be interested?”

Hal placed me in that position and doubled my money. The experience between the phone call and landing in Rochester was quite a trip. The last time I saw Hal was in 1981 or ’82 at the DMA. I saw him talking to some guy in a hotel lobby. I waited until he finished and reintroduced myself. He said something like: “It’s really good of you to say hi. I’m not very popular at these conferences. Bosses don’t want to upset their employees being seen with me and candidates don’t want their bosses to see them with me. You must be here by yourself…” Great guy. Ralph Drybrough MeritDirect Stamford, CT
