Google Inc. generated revenue of $5.51 billion during first quarter 2009, a 6% increase over first quarter 2008 revenue of $5.19 billion but a 3% decrease from fourth quarter 2008 revenue of $5.7 billion. Its net income was $1.42 billion, or 25.8% of its revenue during the most recent quarter, a slight uptick percentagewise from the $1.31 billion, or 25.2% of total revenue, realized a year ago.
The company’s income from operations during the most recent quarter was $1.88 billion, or 34.2% of its revenue, compared with $1.55 billion, or 29.8% of its revenue during first-quarter 2008.
Within its various operations, Google-owned sites generated revenue of $3.7 billion, or 67% of total revenue, during first quarter 2009. This represents a 9% increase over first quarter 2008 revenue of $3.4 billion and a 3% decrease from fourth quarter 2008 revenue of $3.81 billion.
Google’s partner sites generated revenue, through AdSense programs, of $1.64 billion, or 30% of total revenue, in first quarter 2009. This represents a 3% decrease from first quarter 2008 network revenue of $1.69 billion and a 3% decrease from fourth quarter 2008 network revenue of $1.69 billion.
Revenue from outside the United States totaled $2.88 billion, representing 52% of total revenue during first quarter 2009, compared to 51% in first quarter 2008.
Operating expenses, other than cost of revenue, were $1.52 billion in first quarter 2009, or 28% of revenue, compared to $1.65 billion during fourth quarter 2008, or 29% of revenue. The operating expenses in first quarter 2009 included $774 million in payroll-related and facilities expenses, compared to $890 million in fourth quarter of 2008.
Leaving finances aside,aggregate paid clicks, which include clicks related to ads served on Google sites and the sites of our AdSense partners, increased approximately 17% over first quarter 2008’s level and increased approximately 3% over fourth quarter 2008’s rate.
