William John Conway Sr., who founded DialAmerica Marketing, died on March 12. He was 91.
Conway had been worldwide circulation director of Life Magazine when he founded Life Circulation Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Time Inc. The unit was charged with maintaining Life Magazine’s 8 million circulation rate base.
As part of his duties, Conway introduced telephone marketing as a means to sell and retain magazine subscriptions. Stemming from his success, he founded DialAmerica Marketing in 1976. The teleservices firm is currently located in Mahwah, NJ.
Conway was born on August 27, 1917 in Mount Ivy, New York and grew up in Hackensack, NJ. He graduated from Dartmouth College, Tuck School of Business.
Conway was one of the first recipients in New Jersey of the American Legion School Award and was the Interscholastic Tennis Champion of Northern New Jersey. He served in World War II as an aeronautical engineer in Guantanamo Bay.
Conway, who lived in Franklin Lakes, NJ, leaves behind a son, Arthur, and a daughter, Anne. He was grandfather to 6 grandchildren, and had 7 great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his brothers Harry and Robert and his wife, Virginia, as well as another son, William Jr.
