Listen up, industry award show organizers.
We'd like to give a quick cheer to the Webby Awards, which held its 11th annual presentation last month with a rule we think should be standard: five-word acceptance speeches.
The rule was only slightly relaxed for special-achievement honorees like David Bowie, who was given the Webby lifetime achievement award for “pushing the boundaries of art and technology with his digital empire,” which includes the ISP BowieNet, the digital media company UltraStar, and BowieArt, a site that connects emerging visual artists with collectors worldwide.
“I only get five words?” the once and forever Ziggy Stardust asked when given his honor. “Sh*t, that was five. Four more there. That's three.
“Two,” he concluded, before leaving the stage.
Other speech highlights included:
-
“Bidding starts at 99 cents.” — eBay CEO/president Meg Whitman (lifetime achievement award for eBay)
-
“Can anyone fix my computer?” — Beastie Boys (Webby artists of the year)
-
“Have sex, make more kids.” — Nick.com (best youth site)
-
“Because some hotels still suck.” — TripAdvisor (best travel site)
-
“There's no place like home.” — Yahoo! Real Estate (best real estate site)
-
“Promised I'd mention the missus.” — KFC's FlavorStation (best restaurant site)
