RR Donnelley Revenue, Income Up, Margins Down

R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co. generated $2.67 billion in sales during first quarter 2006, up from $1.93 billion a year ago. The company’s net income rose as well, from $106.9 million to $111.9 million, but did not keep up with the rise in sales. Overall operating margin slipped from 10.2% to 9.3%.

The company’s net income rose as well, from $106.9 million to $111.9 million, but did not keep up with the rise in sales. Overall operating margin slipped from 10.2% to 9.3%. The quarter ended March 31.

The publishing and retail services division, which includes magazine, catalog and retail; directories; international; and premedia services, among others, generated $150.6 million in operating income on $1.11 billion, up from $982.3 million in sales and $152.5 million.

Integrated print communications, which include direct mail and business communications services; financial printing; short-run commercial printing; and its recently acquired Astron Group pulled in $727.3 million, with operating income of $76.2 million, up from $532 million in sales and $64.5 million in operating income.

The forms and labels pulled in $425.9 million, and $33.5 million in operating income. In first quarter 2005, the division pulled in $412.2 million in sales and $32.1 million in income.
