New England Business Service, Inc., Groton, MA, had second-quarter revenue of $137.5 million, an 8% increase from $127.3 million in last year's second quarter. Net income rose 10% to $8.7 million from $7.9 million in the same period last year. The quarter ended Dec. 25.

The company attributed the quarter's results to "increasing momentum in the direct sales and packaging and display business segments, and by excellent results in the seasonal holiday card and personalized work clothing product lines sold principally through direct marketing," NEBS chairman and CEO Robert J. Murray said in a statement.

Murray further said that the company would continue its strategy of investing in selling, advertising, product development, and marketing information systems, citing the Internet as a natural and important adjunct to the company's direct marketing capabilities. Internet sales, according to Murray, were $1.2 million, up more than 50% from the immediately preceding quarter. The latest quarter, included the holiday shopping season.
