Corporate privacy officers were urged to become consumer advocates within their companies at a privacy summit in Arlington, VA.
"Consumer confidence is a hallmark of good business, so we see it as our job to pull together the best of what’s out there so that the business community can respond effectively to consumer concerns," said Walter J. O’Brien, executive director of The Privacy Leadership Initiative, according to a PLI statement.
He continued, "Today’s marketplace demands a consumer-centered approach that helps people understand the dynamics of information, the choices they have for protecting it and the value they get from exchanging it. Thus, our mission is to arm consumers and businesses with the knowledge to achieve that goal."
The Privacy Leadership Initiative’s new Web site, http://www.understandingprivacy.org, contains resources for privacy officials, including guides for privacy management and aggregated privacy best practices statements.
O'Brien made his comments during the First Annual Privacy and Data Protection Summit, an event sponsored by the Privacy Officers Association. The two-day Summit ended Friday.
