The beleaguered Priceline.com, Norwalk, CT, has started last-minute services for travelers.
Customers can purchase airline tickets for travel the next day, and reserve hotel rooms at 6 PM for a stay that same night. Consumers can also reserve a rental car and pick it up four hours later.
In the last few months, the company reported a net loss of $25 million for the fourth quarter of 2000 and closed its WebHouse grocery division and endured complaints about customer service. Priceline's founder Jay Walker resigned from the board of directors in February. The last-minute services are thought to be a way to bulk up the company's core business of name-your-price for travel services.
