New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer said a settlement has been reached with an Internet company accused of selling illegal weapons to New York residents.
The company, Family Defense Products Inc., is an Ocala, FL, company, which allegedly sells weapons such as stun guns, dart guns, brass knuckles and switchblades by direct mail. New York law prohibits the sale or shipping of such weapons to New York state consumers.
Spitzer's office opened the investigation after a complaint by a couple whose 13-year-old son, who suffers from an emotional disorder, obtained butterfly knives and brass knuckles from the company.
In settling the allegations, the company has been banned from selling such weapons to New Yorkers. The company has also agreed to: post notices on its Web site saying it will not sell such weapons to New Yorkers; send notices to all New Yorkers who had purchased such weapons, saying they are at risk of arrest and prosecution and urged them to "safely discard" the weapons; and to pay $7,500 in costs and penalties.
