Affluent women who shop from catalogs make four times as many purchases online as affluent women who don't shop from catalogs, according to a survey released yesterday by Shop2u.com.
Keith Wardell, president of Shop2u.com, noted that there is a high correlation between catalog shoppers and donors to charitable organizations.
According to the survey, the six most popular categories receiving donations from affluent female catalog shoppers were health or medical causes (65%), religions organizations (61%), educational institutions (44%), children's appeals (42%), fraternal organizations (42%) and social services (40%).
The survey of 400 women by telephone this spring was conducted by Taylor Nelson Sofres Intersearch and sponsored by Chicago-based Shop2u.com, which delivers catalogs by e-mail.
The results dovetail with a new initiative started by the Chicago based company, which is partnering with non-profit organizations to promote their service and raise donations. For consumers who join Shop2u through a co-branded site, the company will donate 10% of each purchase made through the electronic catalogs in the promotion to charities. The first such site, http://www.diabetes.shop2u.com, a partnership with the American Diabetes Association, debuted two weeks ago.
