J.C. Penney Co. reported $4.12 billion in sales during second quarter 2005, a 5.4% increase from second quarter 2004. The Plano, TX-based retailer’s net income was $131 million, a turnaround from the $1 million it netted a year earlier. The quarter ended July 30.
The company’s direct sales, which include both its catalog and Internet operations, rose by 7.1%, to $659 million, spurred largely by a 30% boost in its online sales.
Same-store sales rose by 4.2% between quarters.
