Hearst Magazines Digital Media is launching social widgets that will push content from some of its magazine titles out to users’ social network pages.
The publisher of Cosmopolitan, Esquire, Marie Claire and Seventeen will pair up with Clearspring Technologies, which builds, distributes and tracks widgets, to construct the mini-applications for Seventeen and The Daily Green (www.thedailygreen.com), a Web-based portal and social network for the eco-conscious.
Users will be able to embed widgets for these properties into their profiles on the major social network MySpace and Facebook, into personalized news aggregators such as iGoogle or Windows Live, and in blogs built on the Blogger and TypePad platforms.
The widgets will include links back to Hearst Digital Media Web sites for the titles and will also include space for advertising. Washington D.C.-based Clearspring designed the widgets to be easily re-skinned and programmed for other Hearst titles and for distribution over Clearspring’s network.
“At Hearst, we always strive to work with the best-in-class to expand our deep content and tools to a bigger audience,” said Hearst Magazines Digital vice president and general manager Chuck Cordray, in a statement. “Not only will the applications help to drive more referral traffic from leading social networks, aggregators and blog sites, but they will also provide our growing roster of advertisers with creative advertising and sponsorship opportunities.”
