Just 8% of American consumers are receiving permission-based commercial e-mail at work according to a survey by e-mail service provider Lyris Technologies.
Not surprisingly, Yahoo, Hotmail and AOL are the top receivers of permission-based commercial e-mail to consumers. Twenty six percent of American Internet users receive commercial e-mail at Yahoo, 21% at Hotmail and 13% at AOL, according to Lyris.
Many factors could account for the low work-account usage for commercial e-mail, including “the rapid adoption of high-speed Internet access at home and increasing consumer comfort in managing multiple e-mail accounts, each serving different purposes,” said David Dabbah, director of sales and marketing for Lyris, in a statement announcing the survey results.
As of last May, 53% of home Internet users accessed the Internet via a broadbaned connection, according to the Pew Internet and American Life Project.
In other findings from Lyris, 30% of those surveyed said they have just one e-mail account, 37% said they have two, 19% said they have three and 13% said they have four or more.
