DMA Objects to Media Mail Rate Hike

The Direct Marketing Association is urging the US Postal Service to reconsider the Postal Rate Commission’s recommendation for a 12.7% increase in the charges for media mail.

In a letter addressed to James Miller, chairman of the USPS Board of Governors, DMA counsel Dana Ackerly said that the media mail rate recommendations are “inconsistent” with the USPS’s request and in fact are more than twice the increase sought by the USPS, and twice the rate recommended for first class or standard mail.

The letter points out that the PRC is nevertheless relying on this data for its rate recommendation. “An increase of this magnitude, under these circumstances, does not meet the statutory requirement that postal rate increase must be justified on the basis of the evidence of record,” the letter affirms.
