According to the company, any wire report that claimed a merger was forthcoming was "incorrect and has no basis in fact."

The confusion may have stemmed from BertelsmannÕs 36 percent stake in Barnesandnoble.com, the publicly traded online arm of book retailer Barnes & Noble.
