A laptop containing names and internal Ameriprise Financial Inc. account identification numbers for 158,000 clients was stolen from an Ameriprise employee’s vehicle, the company announced.

The file did not include any other personal identity information such as Social Security numbers, addresses, phone numbers or birth dates, nor did it contain information from any accounts outside of Ameriprise Financial such as credit card numbers or bank account information.

Another file on the laptop contained names and Social Security numbers of current and former financial advisors.

No other client or advisor data was on the computer, and the Minneapolis-based company has mailed notification letters to all individuals on the file.

Ameriprise Financial said that it hadn’t received any reports that information lost through the theft had been improperly used. It added that the information stolen was not sufficient to access accounts without further personal information provided by the client.

Ameriprise Financial has established dedicated Web sites to answer client and advisor questions, and is offering the financial advisors one year’s worth of credit monitoring services at no cost.

Ameriprise Financial is a financial planning, asset management and insurance company. It was spun off from American Express Co. late last year.
