Americans rank the Internet as the number one spot to buy holiday gifts, with discount stores closely behind in second place, according to a survey from GMIPoll.
The high percentage of shopping online comes as somewhat of a surprise, said GMIPoll, noting that October’s survey found that only 38% of Americans bank online the majority of the time. This would suggest that American consumers have a higher comfort level with disclosing credit card information than with the more detailed data often required for paying bills and banking online.
In contrast, among Americans, independent retailers and luxury goods stores rank in the third and fourth position, respectively.
The survey polled 17,000 online consumers in 18 countries.
