The survey to select Utah’s commemorative quarter closed yesterday. It offered citizens three designs from which to choose: a winter sports theme with the slogan, “The World is Welcome,” a beehive theme with the slogan, “The Beehive State,” and a golden-spike theme with the slogan, “Crossroads of the West.”
To date, Utah has passed two infamous e-mail-related laws that have caused havoc outside its borders: one early in the decade that resulted in thousands of nuisance lawsuits, and most recently, a so-called child protection law that has the potential to help Internet predators identify children’s e-mail addresses. Given the state’s propensity to pass disastrously crafted, industry-killing e-mail legislation, forgive us if we believe the three commemorative-quarter designs available to Utahans failed to reflect the true spirit of the state.
Allow us to offer some alternatives: An unemployed e-mail marketer with the slogan “Screwing up Online Commerce for Everyone!” a child staring bug-eyed at genitalia of circus-like proportions on his computer screen with the slogan “Helping Online Predators Find Your Kids!” and a Mormon theme with the slogan, “No One Understands Unsolicited Pitching like Utah!”
Utah will unveil its commemorative-quarter design later this month.
