Stupid Research Watch: Another Canadian Study States the Obvious

On the heels of a Canadian study finding that—gasp!—ordering from spam often results in the delivery of a package purported to contain whatever it was the person bought, another team of Canadians have determined men are more receptive to online porn.

On the heels of a Canadian study finding that—gasp!—ordering from spam often results in the delivery of a package purported to contain whatever it was the person bought, another team of Canadians have determined men are more receptive to online porn.

“A new study in the Canadian Journal of Human Sexuality finds that men who spend a lot of time on the Internet are much more likely to click on sexually explicit spam, unsolicited email, and pop-ups advertising sex sites,” said a report on the study on CTV.ca, the Web site of Canadian broadcaster CTV.

“Psychologists at Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Guelph in Ontario used a sample of 482 Canadian male and female university students, exploring their reactions to sexually explicit Internet material,” the CTV report said. “Overall, the men had more positive attitudes towards online sexual content than women, and were more likely to explore unsolicited emails and pop-ups. In fact, the results ‘suggest that males were very receptive to receiving this kind of material,’ the authors said.”

Boy, those Canadian researchers are into some uncharted territory with this one. Thank god for the tenure system and the academic freedom it protects.

Next the Canadian Journal of Human Sexuality will publish a study concluding that 14-year-old boys would rather not be called to stand in front of the class by their really hot math teacher.

And just as guilty of idiocy as the people behind this study is CTV for publishing a straight-faced story on it.

Message to the psychologists at Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Guelph, the editors at the Canadian Journal of Human Sexuality, and the editors at CTV: You all really do need to get out more. … Preferably together. You know, go have a few drinks, chat a bit, maybe even dance a little.

Hell, by the end of the evening, you’ll probably have the makings of another study.
