TiVo Shows Commercials While Viewers Search for Programs

TIVo Inc. has introduced a new pause screen menu within live and recorded television programs to show commercials to viewers, who might otherwise fast forward through them.

Commercials can be targeted based on keyword descriptions of specific programs or program genres, such as sports.

“With the number of DVR homes on the rise, TV advertisers are facing a very serious commercial avoidance issue that must be addressed now,” said in a statement David Sanford, vice president of marketing and product management for TiVo.

The pause menu enables viewers to search for and download programs, while commercials are played. No ads are shown when viewers are watching programs.

Sandford described this arrangement as a “win win situation” for viewers and advertisers.
