Marketers seeking to target text messages to cell phones can rent the Short Message Service file. More than 113 million records are available. Each text message is limited to 160 characters, including opt-in and opt-out information. Unlike e-mail, text messages arrive opened on cell phone screens. Short message codes have been created to transmit text by dialing four- to six-digit codes, rather than the standard 11 digits normally used for sending someone such a message. This file is selectable by cell phone service providers, such as AT&T, Cingular, Nextel, Sprint PCS, T-Mobile and Verizon. The sources include surveys, the Internet and other proprietary data.

National Geographic Society

New list segments identifying wealthy households, families with children and Canadians are being offered by the National Geographic Society. National Geographic's Gold Household list identifies 696,912 subscribers and members. These households reportedly have incomes in excess of $100,000. Roughly 63% of the records provide men's names. Their median age is 45 and median household income is $142,000. About 96% are homeowners and 72% are married. The National Geographic Kids subscribers file is the largest with 924,000 records, including 767,429 last-12-month subscribers. Nearly 80% of child subscribers share the magazine with their parents. The smallest segment, National Geographic Canadian catalog buyers, has 1,381 records. Orders ran about $85 each.

These recently released files identify some 25,000 consumers who paid $40 to $90 to receive certificates, suitable for framing, that assign people's names to stars visible in the nighttime sky. One name per star is assigned, but the names are not recognized by any scientific organization, only by the private Universal Star Council. The certificates are sold primarily as gifts.
