Mail Stream: A Report on Incoming Direct Mail

City Harvest Envelope Incorporates Involvement Stickers

Among fundraising promotions, involvement stickers are rather uncommon. Rarer still are involvement stickers featured prominently on the outer envelope of a fundraising mailing, a creative strategy utilized in the most recent effort tracked from City Harvest. In addition to the text, "How you can help feed 260,000 hungry New Yorkers this week! [Just say Yes]," the outer envelope of the white #10 package includes two square 1-1/4" stickers, representing "Yes!" and "No!" responses. However, unlike other promotions that use yes/no stickers like the Citizens Against Government Waste control, the City Harvest labels are not just an involvement device. They also contain a creative message, clearly illustrating the organization’s mission to supply food shelters with leftovers from restaurants, cafeterias, supermarkets and small businesses in New York City. On the "Yes!" sticker, a City Harvest delivery truck is pictured with the caption "Rescue good food." The "No!" option depicts a garbage truck, stating "Throw it away." Prospects who choose the "Yes!" option are asked to return the sticker and reply form along with a donation of $36/$83/$135/other.

Zingerman's Draws Its Food
In addition to its online presence and Ann Arbor Michigan based delicatessen, Zingerman’s offers its bakery and deli fare via a colorful hand-drawn mail order catalog. The recent Holiday Gift Catalog features an extensive four-page wrap, including a welcome for new customers, a brief company history and descriptions of some of Zingerman’s most popular items. An endorsement from Food & Wine Magazine further introduces Zingerman’s as one of the "Top 25 Food Markets in the World." Products range from gift baskets to artisan bread and handmade cheese for gift giving or personal consumption. Clever copy tempts food lovers with items such as the Tasty Pastry Dreambox ($149), Sourcream Coffeecake, described as the "most popular" gift ($25 - $45) or a "perfect lunch" - the Rockin’ Reuben Sandwich Kit ($60 - $80). Prominently featured on the outer wrap is a "first time buyer special," offering a 10% discount on a new customer’s first order. Orders can be placed via mail order, phone, fax or online.

American Kidney Fund Mails Nickel Package
The health organization American Kidney Fund stresses the importance of every nickel of funding in a recent promotion. The key component of the mailing, a nickel coin, is glued to the solicitation letter, and is visible through the windowed envelope, which reads, "It's amazing what the American Kidney Fund can accomplish with the enclosed nickel!" According to the personalized solicitation letter, 5¢ can fund each working hour of emergency assistance provided by the American Kidney Fund over the course of one year. Selected text in the letter is underlined or printed in bold font for greater emphasis. Funding information is given throughout the promotion, in which sample gift amounts are displayed in both dollars and nickels. For example, $15 (300 nickels) can fund transportation to dialysis treatments; $20 (400 nickels) can provide medical supplies for a patient with diabetes (the leading cause of kidney failure); and $25 (500 nickels) can help disabled kidney patients with medication co-pays. Recipients who wish to help fight kidney disease are urged to return the "hard-working nickel" along with a gift of their choice.
