Mail Stream: A Report on Incoming Direct Mail

Exposures Frames "Boo-tiful" Memories

Exposures catalog capitalizes on the upcoming Halloween celebration in its Holiday Preview 2004 book. The Halloween 2004 Frame ($24) is featured front and center on a deep orange cover decorated with a sprinkling of stray candy corn. Inside, a page called "Boo-tiful Memories" offers the Felicity Photo Album ($29), a Halloween Embellishment Kit ($16.95), and an engaging story of a young girl named Taylor. Called "love at first lollipop," the story describes the child's introduction to trick-or-treating, and concludes, "Thanks to her mother's photo-documenting, Taylor will have a wonderful record of her early sweet successes." True to its title, the 68-page book also looks ahead to later holidays. Exposures offers hand-painted Christmas ornaments, picture frames, calendars and a wide selection of greeting cards which can be finished off with photos of loved ones. Aside from goods that incorporate photos into their design, the catalog also features cabinets, consoles, display cubes and shelves that can house keepsakes and other home accessories with prices ranging anywhere from $69 for a rectangular open display cube to $795 for a console table. Ordering is available through mail, phone, fax or online.

Dollmasters Wonderland Serves Up a Nostalgic Halloween
Dollmasters Wonderland, perhaps an unlikely catalog to feature Halloween-themed merchandise, recently mailed its Early Fall edition featuring a small collection of vintage collectibles, memorabilia and unique decorations inspired by the spooky holiday. The 11" x 7" book's cover subtly hints at the holiday with two small pumpkin graphics, an old-fashioned looking photograph of a child playing, and the title and cover copy all presented in a seasonal orange. A short note on the inside cover is more pointed, posing the question, "If Halloween is the holiday for our children, both real and 'inner,' doesn't it deserve more recognition, more planning?" To help in that process, Dollmasters promises "memorabilia that reminds you of old-time celebrations." Vivid photographs and wistful copy accompany the decorative merchandise, which includes figurines, dolls, ceramics and paper mache designs. Prices range from $20 for a copy of "Halloween Merrymaking: An Illustrated Celebration of Fun, Food, and Frolics from Halloweens Past" to $850 for the limited edition "Bewitched" (an artistic collaboration collectible set consisting of two mohair teddy bears and a toy cat). Orders can be placed via mail, phone, fax or online.

Country Sampler Offers Free Sample Issue
Country Sampler, the magazine of "Country Decorating Ideas" and shopping tips, recently promoted its down-home editorial with a new mail piece offering a free sample issue. The 6" x 9" self-mailer folds along its left side, with the top flap essentially all order form, except for a little space for selling. That space reinforces the editorial product, reading, "You've found all the country things that make you feel good!" The reverse of the mail piece offers brand-building copy, calling the magazine "The #1 Source for Country Decor." This headline accompanies artwork showing a traditional country-style interior furnished with a painted chest, ladder-back chair and an oversized antique-looking doll. Although most of the creative has been reworked, and the format has changed, it retains the look and feel of past mail pieces. It also retains the soft offer of $19.96 for six issues, including one free.
