Mail Stream: A Report on Incoming Direct Mail

Passover Mailing from The Source for Everything Jewish

In addition to seasonal efforts, The Source for Everything Jewish mails annual, holiday-themed catalogs marking observances such as Chanukkah, Purim and Passover. The front cover of the recent 64-page book is dated Passover 2005/5765 (incorporating the current year of the Jewish calendar) and calls attention to the start of the holiday. A special Passover section located in the middle of the book features products ranging from a wide selection of Seder ware and food to books and educational toys for children. Additional Passover items featured on the back cover include a Passover gift basket with wine ($75) and "The New York Times Passover Cookbook" ($25). The remainder of the catalog is filled with other Judaica product offerings, such as decorative items for the home. A small Israeli flag incorporated into many of the product descriptions denotes that a particular piece of merchandise was produced in Israel.

Johns Hopkins Promises Better Health After 50
The latest mailing from the Johns Hopkins Medical Letter/Health After 50 targets seniors interested in authoritative and reliable health information. Departing from previous #10 package formats, Health After 50 recently mailed an 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" "Special Bulletin" magalog titled "Secrets for the Second Half of Life." Cover copy adds, "Why some people hold onto their health longer - and how you can, too." Johns Hopkins ensures the credibility and quality of its information by touting its ranking as the number one hospital 14 years in a row on both the front cover and second page of the piece. Throughout the magalog, health issues such as diet, cholesterol, Alzheimer's disease and cancer are discussed in brief articles. In addition to specific ailments, the mail piece also addresses the more global issue of the rising costs of prescription drugs. A special "clip and save" guide advertised along the address panel of the magalog instructs readers how to save 40% on prescription drugs by ordering online. The soft offer for the newsletter is set at $15 for 12 issues, including one for free.

Lands' End Mails Plus Size Collection
While past catalogs from Lands' End Women have featured plus-size clothing, the recent "Spring Preview 2005" edition, subtitled "The Plus Size Collection," is dedicated exclusively to larger sized apparel, "designed with you in mind." The copy on the inside cover stresses the "Lands' End Fit," and discusses its process in creating plus-size clothing "that fits and flatters no matter the size." Whereas other plus-size apparel makers may "add a few inches here and there," this collection is created proportionally. In fact, the catalog features 19 original styles, designed specifically for sizes 16W to 26W, which shoppers won't find in any other Lands' End catalog. These exclusive items are identified in the book with a small green square "Especially for You" logo. Stylish spring and summer clothing options stand out in the 68-page catalog, with bright colors, floral designs and pastel stripes. A small selection of swimwear includes tankinis, slender suits, separates and cover-ups. Available sizes include Large through 3X and 16W through 26W. Prices range from $15 for a sleeveless knit tee to $158 for a patterned blazer, promoted as the "Classic Summer Blazer in a lovely Italian blend."
