Abercrombie & Fitch Co. recorded a net loss of $11.8 million during the first quarter of 2010, an improvement over the $59.2 million net loss it reported a year earlier. During the same period, its net sales rose from $601.7 million to $687.8 million – 14% jump.
Most of that sales boost came from international channels. The company’s domestic sales (both retail and direct) rose to $568.8 million, 5% higher than first quarter 2009’s level.
During its most recent quarter, direct-to-consumer sales played a comparatively small role, amounting to only $68.8 million. But that figure was 42% higher than its direct sales a year ago. In comparison, comparable retail sales within its two of brands – Abercrombie & Fitch and abercrombie kids – rose by single digits, and its Hollister Co. brand saw a revenue slip of 2%. Overall, comparable retail sales rose by only 1%.
The company’s first quarter ended May 1.
