Alloy Loss Widens In First Quarter

Alloy Inc.’s net loss deepened from $1.6 million during first-quarter 2008 to $2.7 million in first-quarter 2009

Alloy Inc.’s net loss deepened from $1.6 million during first-quarter 2008 to $2.7 million in first-quarter 2009. The company’s revenue fell from $49.1 million to $43 million during the same period.

Within the targeted marketing program provider’s divisions, its first-quarter promotion segment revenue was $15.1 million, down $15.8 million from a year earlier. Revenue decreases in the company's sampling and on-campus marketing businesses were partially offset by an increase in the AMP agency business. The unit’s operating loss was $200,000, compared with an operating net loss of $700,000.

Media segment revenue was $18.5 million, a drop from $19.9 million. Revenue decreased in the Alloy’s entertainment and display board businesses, partially offset by an increase in the Alloy Education business. Operating income was $900,000, a decrease from operating income of $1.2 million.

Placement segment revenue was $9.4 million, a decrease from $13.5 million. Revenue decreases in the company's college and military newspaper businesses were offset by increases in the multicultural newspaper business. Operating income was $200,000, a decrease from operating income of $500,000.
